The town of Civitella del Tronto is part of the prestigious circuit of "The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" and is considered one of the pearls of Abruzzo.
It is located on a rocky outcrop of travertine stone, offering wonderful panoramic views.
At the highest point of the town, situated on a hill that overlooks the village center from above, at about 600 meters above sea level, stands the Civitella del Tronto Fortress. Built for defensive purposes in the 16th century by Philip II of Habsburg, King of Spain, the fortress has an elliptical shape and is one of the most imposing works of military engineering, currently occupying an area of about 25,000 square meters.
A characteristic feature of this village is its often narrow and steep streets that define the historic center and lead upwards to the fortress. The narrowest street, known as "Ruetta," is also the narrowest street in Italy.
